So many children struggle in times of crisis, whether because of natural disasters, mass shootings, personal family upheaval or times of grief. We know songs can heal, but what songs work best?  Join our panel of experienced song leaders, Sarah Pirtle, Ruth Pelham and Stuart Stotts as they share singable, supportive and sensitive songs that build connection and empower youth in challenging times.  An open discussion will follow with an opportunity for participants to share and explore songs that bring the healing power of singing together.

Sarah Pirtle is a musician and peace educator with eleven national awards for her songs including the Magic Penny. She was the central founder of the Children’s Music Network and started the journal “Pass It On!”  Her vision of cooperation in CMN exemplifies the message that interlaces her four decades of work: pass on timeless values, and care for the next generations. She recorded five CDs with Albany's A Gentle Wind sharing songs like "My Roots Go Down," and "Mahogany Tree." Her five books include An Outbreak of Peace about changing racism, which received the Olive Branch Award for outstanding peace book of the year.

Ruth Pelham is an educator, songleader, songwriter, workshop leader, and community organizer whose abundant warmth and exuberance accompany her performances for people of all ages. Her songs embrace themes of peace, justice, and environmental responsibility, and give voice to hope and possibility in these challenging times. In 1977 she founded the Music Mobile that presents cultural arts and empowerment programs in schools, parks, festivals, libraries, universities, and diverse community venues. Based in Albany NY, Ruth is recognized nationally as a pioneer in community arts and education, and is the recipient of numerous awards including the Children’s Music Network Magic Penny Award..

Stuart Stotts is an author, storyteller, educator, and songwriter. He’s sung with and performed for kids and families in schools, libraries, and community settings around the world since 1984. Stuart is a Kennedy Center teaching artist and a frequent presenter at educational events, keynoting conferences as he did for CMN,  and leading workshops for early childhood and elementary school teachers, librarians, and social service professionals around the country.
