Presented by author, artist and radio host, Devin Walker, this important workshop explores how systemic racism has shaped what children hear, see, and experience in music and popular culture — and what we must do about it.
For generations, children (and adults) have chanted songs, recited rhymes, and consumed entertainment without ever knowing the histories embedded within them. In his new book and this workshop, Devin pulls back the curtain on these seemingly innocent cultural artifacts to reveal a hidden legacy of racism woven into the foundations of American children’s media.
Participants will come away with actionable steps to make their classrooms, story times and performances safe spaces where differences are encouraged, respected and nurtured. If we’re all more mindful of how we challenge racism as it happens, we’ll find ways to make new self-affirming memories and melodies for our young people.
